Tile Facts to Know Before Heading to the Tile Store

pic3Tile is one of the best surfaces for floors, walls, backsplashes, and even countertops. But while most people like the way tile looks, they know next to nothing about what it is, how it works, or even what to look for when shopping for tile.

Here are some helpful tile facts to get you started.

Tile Fort Lauderdale – Types of Tile

Porcelain tile is one of the most popular types of tile thanks to its look, durability, and low cost.

There are basically two types of porcelain tile: Through-Bodied and Glazed.

Through-Bodied tile is made of clay, sand, and a few other substances. When it is fired, the color of the tile is the same all the way through.

Glazed tile, however, is made of plain clay that is covered with a thin layer of glass or a ceramic veneer. It can provide the same colors, patterns, and other benefits of through-bodied tile at a fraction of the cost. And the only time you will see a difference is if it were to chip.

Chipped glazed tile will show the white or neutral-colored clay beneath the layer of porcelain or glass.

Tile Fort Lauderdale – PEI Ratings

Another important tile fact to know has to do with PEI ratings, which tell you how strong a particular type of tile is.

PEI ratings go from 1 to 5, with 1 being the least durable type of tile and 56 being the strongest.

Tile with a PEI of 1 typically would be used only places where it isn’t going to get much traffic or use, such as for backsplashes. Tile with a PEI of 5 would be used for heavily-trafficked areas, such as home floors or hallways in commercial buildings.

Knowing a little bit about tile before going shopping at the tile store can make the experience more enjoyable and less intimidating.
